Papers of Fillmore Norfleet [manuscript], 1931-1979.

The collection contains translations of French novels, correspondence, and research material. Translations by Norfleet include "Jesus-the-quail" and "Montmartre" by Francis Carco, and "The other sleep" by Julien Green. There are also transcriptions of Jean Cocteau's "Le livre blanc" and Robert H. Fisher's "Narrative of a voyage to the West Indies." The correspondence contains a letter, 1926, from Claude Swanson enclosing a Carter Glass autograph; a letter, 1940, from Anne Green re: World War II; letters, 1934 and 1944, from Julien Green concerning Norfleet's translation of "The other sleep," and his student life at the University of Virginia; and a letter from Carco regarding "Jesus-the-quail." Research material on the history and genealogy of Suffolk and Nansemond County, Va., the Jamaica Ice Company venture, Dr. Robert Henning Fisher, and Julien Green is present. The latter includes newsclippings, an article by James Southall Wilson, a reprinting of his first published short story "The apprentice psychiatrist," and two photographs of Julien and Anne Green. Of interest is a view of Washington Square, Suffolk, Va., after the fire of 1888. Other correspondents include Bernard Fay, Douglas Southall Freeman, the Marquis de Juigne, Yvonne Bezard, Jules Tramet, and John Calvin Metcalf.
